Peter Gabriel Sound Check
July 29 2001

Each day I would arrive early and hear music being played from the main stage. Friday and Saturday it was The Neville Brothers, on Sunday I thought they had put in a Peter Gabriel CD until I got to the main stage.

Peter Gabriel’s Band

The band for this show was amazing. Tony Levin performed at the White House for President John F. Kennedy, was a member of King Crimson and had worked with John Lennon, Lou Reed and Peter Gabriel.

One of the coolest parts of this band was that Peter Gabriel’s daughter Melanie adding angel like background vocals.

For those who are familiar with the song’s origins, “Come Talk to Me” got additional poignancy due to Melanie’s appearance. The song was originally composed as a plea from a father who believes he does not spend enough time with his daughter.

We weren’t expecting a complete band to play during Gabriel’s performance because it was only supposed to be a brief acoustic set with Tony Levin and David Rhodes. In addition to Rhodes’ acoustic guitar and Levin’s electric upright bass, Ged Lynch on drums, and James McNally (of Afro Celt Sound System) had a keyboard rack.
