Yakima War – Battle of Seattle

Tensions between the native inhabitants and European settlers exploded during the Yakima War. Pioneer Square was fortified with a temporary stockade during the “Battle of Seattle” to provide for its defense. Although the actual conflict was rather small, it served to highlight the difficulties associated with coexistence and territorial expansion.
