World of Music, Arts, and Dance

Founded by musician Peter Gabriel in 1982, the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) festival made its full-fledged U.S. debut, bringing together an eclectic mix of international artists and audiences eager to experience a tapestry of sounds, sights, and rhythms from around the world.

Festival Highlights and Atmosphere

Despite the Pacific Northwest’s reputation for overcast skies, the festival enjoyed unusually hot and sunny weather, with temperatures reaching the mid- to upper-80s. The warm conditions contributed to a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere, drawing large crowds to each performance. The Mainstage, situated near the park’s entrance, was surrounded by food vendors and stalls, creating a bustling festival environment.

Attendees could explore various stages, including the Big Top—a large circus-style tent hosting intimate performances—and the Starbucks Village Stage, nestled behind a stand of trees for a more secluded experience.

Beyond the music, the festival offered workshops, art installations, and dance performances, embodying WOMAD’s mission to celebrate global cultures through a multidimensional approach.
